London – British Museum

Home Landmarks London › British Museum

The British Museum is the largest museum in the United Kingdom and therefore it is impossible to see everything in one day. A vast repository of the world’s cultures, with entire sections devoted to Egyptian, Greek, and Middle Eastern artifacts, as well as the piece which united them all: The Rosetta Stone. Led by a guide, you can choose one of the three free “Eye-opener tours” to see a few highlights of the museum in 50 minutes. It’s one of our Top 10 things to do in London.

Near the entrance you can find one of the highlights: the Rosetta Stone, the key to the deciphering of hieroglyphs. Another highlight is the Parthenon Sculptures, a series of pediments, metopes, and friezes from the Parthenon in Athens, in the Duveen Gallery.

You can also find a mummified cat. Cats and sacred cows were mummified in Ancient Egypt. This cat comes from Abydos and dates from around 30 BC. Many Egyptian deities took on animal shapes, as seen on wall paintings and other artifacts.

the remains of the colossal granite statue of Rameses II (c1275 BC) from his memorial temple at Thebes are worth to see aswell. The statue was acquired in the late 18th century by Charles Townley, British ambassador to Rome.

Been there several times, it is a trully amazing museum, and free. I could go there everyday for a year and still have more to see.
